Is Frequent Vomiting in Cats Normal?

Home / Blog / Is Frequent Vomiting in Cats Normal?

✨ Vomiting can happen occasionally in pets, but it is more common in cats than in dogs. Cats often vomit hairballs because they groom themselves and swallow loose fur. Sometimes pets may vomit undigested food, which can happen if they eat too quickly.

✨ In most cases, vomiting should stop within about 6 hours and should not occur every day. If vomiting happens frequently or your cat becomes lethargic, weak, or less active, you should monitor the symptoms and consult a veterinarian.

✨ Here are some common types of vomiting to watch for:

Yellow, foamy vomit
Usually caused by stomach acid. If it happens more than 3 times, you should consult a vet.

Greenish vomit
May come from the stomach or upper small intestine and could indicate a serious infection.

Vomiting with fresh blood
May indicate severe vomiting that has caused small tears in the esophagus.

Brown-colored vomit
Could indicate bleeding in the stomach.

Vomiting undigested food
May happen if the cat eats too quickly or has gastritis. If symptoms do not improve after withholding food and water for 4–6 hours, seek veterinary advice.

White foamy vomit (sometimes with mucus)
Check whether the cat also has a cough. If the symptom is persistent, a veterinary check is recommended.
